一、信心的恩典是基督之灵在蒙拣选者心中的工作(林前12:3;约3:5;多3:5;约6:44-45,65;弗2:8;腓1:29;彼后1:1;彼前1:2),使他们能够相信,以致灵魂得救(多1:1;来10:39);这信心通常是借着圣道的事工来实现的(太28:19-20;罗10:14,17;林前1:21):通过圣道的传讲,并且通过圣礼的施行和祷告,得以增长并坚固(彼前2:2;徒20:32;罗1:16-17;太28:19;徒2:38;林前10:16;11:23-29;路17:5;腓4:6-7)。(译注:神赐下得救信心恩典的途径是「恩具 meas of grace」,包括圣道的传讲、圣礼的施行和祷告三个方面,并非今天许多人偏重特殊经历的信主见证和教会界流行的各种「属灵产品」。因此,传福音的人首先要扎实地在圣经上装备自己。)

The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls, is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts; and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word: by which also, and by the administration of the sacraments, and prayer, it is increased and strengthened.

二、借此信心,基督徒相信圣经所启示的一切都是真实的,因为是神自己的权威在其中说话(彼后1:20-21;约4:42;帖前2:13;约壹5:9-10;徒24:14);他们会照着其中每处具体经文采取相应的回应;顺服其命令(诗119:10-11,48,97-98,167-168;约14:15),畏惧其警戒(结9:4;赛66:2;来4:1),接受神对今生和来世的应许(来11:13;提前4:8)。但得救的信心的主要行动是,根据恩典之约,单单接受、领受和倚靠基督,得着称义、成圣和永生(约1:12;徒16:31;加2:20;徒15:11;提后1:9-10)。(译注:本节结合了清教徒对于信心的两种定义。第一句是以早期清教徒William Perkins为代表的定义,也是加尔文的定义,以神为对象,注重抓住神的应许,所以有信心就会有确据;第二句是以后期清教徒William Ames为代表的定义,以耶稣基督为对象,注重意志的决定,但不是亚米念主义那种自主的意志。)

By this faith, a Christian believeth to be true whatsoever is revealed in the Word, for the authority of God Himself speaking therein; and acteth differently, upon that which each particular passage thereof containeth; yielding obedience to the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and embracing the promises of God for this life, and that which is to come. But the principal acts of saving faith are, accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal life, by virtue of the covenant of grace.

三、这信心有程度的不同,有强有弱(来5:13-14;罗14:1-2;太6:30;罗4:19-20;太8:10);可能会经常受到许多种方式的攻击和削弱,但终必得胜(路22:31-32;弗6:16;约壹5:4-5);它在许多人里面逐渐增长,直到借着那为我们信心创始成终的基督(来12:2),得着完全的确据(来6:11-12;10:22;西2:2)。(译注:传福音不能只讲爱、接纳和喜乐,却不讲受苦,因为信心要在苦难和试炼中得以成熟。)

This faith is different in degrees, weak or strong; may be often and many ways assailed and weakened, but gets the victory; growing up in many to the attainment of a full assurance through Christ, who is both the author and finisher of our faith.
